The Connection-First Declaration

How do we give every child the emotional foundation they need to learn, grow, and thrive?

The answer begins with connection. Children do not develop in isolation; they develop within the context of relationships. Long before a child can speak, they come to know who they are through the people who care for them: being seen, heard, and understood.

It is science. Optimal development and connection happen within empathic, responsive, and nurturing relationships. Human connection is what fosters neural connection in the developing brain. Every responsive glance, every comforting word, every moment of being truly understood helps wire that brain, and it is these responsive, empathic, and supportive relationships that power a child's growth and shape the patterning of healthy brain development, learning, and success in life.

That is where every child's story truly begins. And it is why we commit, before anything else, to connection first.

Today, a new presence is entering childhood. AI now talks, tutors, comforts, and listens, endlessly patient and always available. And it is reaching children before they have built the human capacities it can quietly stand in for.

We welcome what technology can do. But no tool can do what a person does: sit beside a frustrated child, name the feeling, and stay until it passes. When children and adults are emotionally dysregulated, learning and teaching cannot occur. Connection is not a soft skill. It is the foundation of every other one.

So before we ask what AI can do for our children, we ask a better question: do our children have what no machine can give them?

Therefore, we pledge:

  1. Put human connection first. No tool will replace a relationship a child developmentally needs.
  2. Build EI before AI. Teach children to know, express, and regulate emotion before and alongside any technology.
  3. Ask the connection question. Before adopting any tool: will this increase or decrease human interaction?
  4. Model what we teach. Children learn calm from calm adults. We will be the regulation we hope they find.

This is not a movement against machines. It is a movement for childhood, for the look, the voice, the moment of being understood that no algorithm can replace. Our children will inherit a world filled with artificial intelligence. Let's make sure they meet it with the real thing.
